A high school student who rarely participates in class approaches you after school and quietly says, "My grandpa is really sick." He avoids eye contact.
Immediately say, "Don't worry, I'm sure he'll be fine. You should focus on your grades."
Share a story about when your own relative was sick to show you can relate.
Pause, take a breath, and say, "Thank you for telling me. That sounds incredibly hard. I'm here to listen if you want to talk more about it."
Suggest he go see the school counselor and then change the subject.
